It's Been a While

Despite good intentions it has been literal years since I added a post to this blog. I always intended to add content more regularly but as you all know ‘stuff’ just happens and you get caught up in the day to day busyness of running a busnaz instead. Am I right?
Anyway here I am now, putting somewhat random thoughts to metaphorical paper. All real thoughts too, no AI I promise. I’m writing this at a time of self reflection. Solitude Coffee Roasters will soon be turning four years old at our Coolum Beach warehouse location, which in itself is kinda wild to me. I’m not sure what to make of it. Four years isn’t “watch your kids grow up” time, but it is long enough to get an undergrad in accounting or something (no that was NOT my fallback plan if roasting coffee didn’t work out). That four years has also happened to coincide with a time that feels, at least to me, like the world is just getting crazier and crazier and real connection with actual real people is only getting more challenging.
To top it off, stuff is just getting expensive, we all know it. The coffee industry has been feeling this big-time which has made running a small scale independent coffee roastery a particular challenge. Margins have really been getting squeezed, on a product that at least in Australia has been traditionally considered a staple. Now it is becoming more of a discretionary spend item.
So back to my self reflection. Do I regret starting a small coffee business, given all of the above? Absolutely not. I’ve learnt a tonne, not just about running a business and coffee roastery, but also about myself. I’ve met some amazing people, and have such an amazing little group of cheerleaders who are always there to help out or just listen. I’ve drunk some pretty great coffee too.
Do people still even read stuff?

100% agree on the real connection comment, I see Cafes and Roasteries as essential institutions for keeping the sense or real connection and community alive. Its so much more than just roasting and making coffee!
